QUESTION

Here is a question...

I am nearly ready to put the backing on a quilt I've made for my nephew's birthday(picture soon!)...I am currently trying to USE the fabric I have instead of BUYing more...even when places like evil fabric.com has a completely unbelievable sale on fabrics I quite like....

SO, do I use a fabric in my stash...say....this fabric

my daughter thinks this is great (me, not so much)...and I have 4+ yards of it (garage sale purchase ... came with a lot of fabrics...I can never pass these lots up...never know what might be in them!)

or do I piece fabrics together for a backing on a quilt I have spent a lot of time making?

  1. okay, here comes my selfish self...ready? i only spend money on backs for quilts for ME. For a nephew, I would TOTALLY go with the garage sale fabric that is actually cute. I'm assuming he's not 47? I think it's great for a kid. You put all your love and effort into the front, it does not diminish the quilt if the backing is one piece, unpieced.

and that's my 2 cents today!

  2. Oh, and you are totally supposed to tell me where the good fabrics are for sale! even if it's evilfabric.com

  3. I agree with Des...but this is without seeing the front, so I can't make a 100% sure suggestion.

But you can also, maybe take the piece you already have and piece it with some solids, like red & navy blue (I'd stay away from white...white doesn't do well with kids).

And now don't get me started with fabric.com...I've blown half of my paycheck there a few months ago....I'm addicted and most likely need some serious intervention.

  4. I'm totally with Des. But I LOVE pieced backings too. So if it's for you or your own family, and piecing will make it all match, go ahead and piece something. If it's for someone else, use the patriotic stuff. That's just my 2 cents.

  5. I'm all for using what you got! Make that fabric work for you...and theeeeennnnn when there is an empty spot on the shelf you'll be that much more justified to shop at the evil fabric empire. =)

  6. If you don't "feel" the love when you lay your top on the backing, then don't use that one. I never used to use sheets for the backing but have noticed a real trend among several quilters online. I have changed my mind about them, and used them for quilts that are going to be well loved. That could be an option for you...especially when you see the quilt being used! Hope this helps, Elaine

  7. You know I'm always amazed at how good a great quilt can make a fabric look. So I would go for it. I'm always pretty pleased with the results even if I'm iffy on it at first. And like others say...it's for a quilt for a child, then you want it to be child friendly. And pieced backs can be some of my favorites!!!
